Contemporary French polished calf, raised bands, gilt decorated panels, 2n and 3rd panels with red morocco leather labels having gilt title and volume no., respectively. Collation: Vol. 1- [xxii], [1-3] 4-554 + engraved frontis and 25 copper engraved plates; vol. 2- [ii] [1] 2-309, [3] pp. + engraved frontis and 29 engraved maps, plans and views on 53 sheets. Coat of arms labels on boards of both volumes removed leaving impression. Some wear to bottom of front covers. Marble end papers; all edges red. Internal condition very good. Some browning to several astronomical plates in volume 2. The large map of Quito is three joined plates no. XXI in Volume 1. This is the first French edition with the Paris imprint appearing on some copies, as noted by Sabin. Major scientific and exploration expedition by two officers of Spanish navy with Juan covering the scientific aspects and Ulloa, an astronomer, assisted with the scientific studies and also historical observations.
