About this Item

lxxv, 266 pages; frontis, illustrations, folding map; bound in publisher's red cloth with imprinted gilt image to the cover with gilt title on the spine. Fading to the spine and one inch fading along the top of the front cover. Former owner's name in ink on the inside cover "J Stewart Lowths". The text reprinted here is from the 1729 edition which formed the greater part of volume III. The introduction is concerned with exploration of Australia, Dampier's expedition, the courts-martial, and the effect of the voyage. Illustrations are taken from the 1729 edition. The editor has added documents, notes, and an index to the account of the 1697 to 1702 voyage. The chief value of the book is in his descriptions of lands, animals, plants and natural phenomena rather than his narrative of events. Aside from the exterior fading the volume is clean inside and outside. Bookseller Inventory # 10827
