About this Item

Volumes I and II contain 3 folding plates each. All plates and errata present, but lacking the half titles. Half calf and marbled boards with gilt spines, rubbed, with some loss to the spines of volumes II and IV; interiors very crisp and clean, with only the occasional marginal tear or minor stain. Repairs affecting the text on the title page and the first 20 pages of volume V. Bound by Nettleton & Son of Plymouth, with their sticker on the paste-down. First edition. According to Barbier, Le chevalier de Bisgelin de Kerdu was the companion of the author on this journey, though he had nothing to do with writing the work. It includes an exceptional amount of information about several Northern and Eastern European countries, going beyond mere impressions of the people and countryside to document an unusual array of data. Examples include an inventory of the most important books housed at the University in Prague, lists of imports and exports to and from Stockholm, military calculations, and a helpful section on foreign vocabulary for travelers. This work has an interesting connection to the work of Carl Linnaeus. It includes descriptions of several important natural history collections, including those of Anders Sparrman (Linnaeus's pupil), as well as that of Gustaf Carlson. It also includes a description of the collection of the late Queen Lovisa Ulkria, famously described by Linnaeus himself. Bookseller Inventory # 14937
