Nabokov's first novel to be written in English, originally published in 1941, here translated by Yvonne Davet (who at one time served as Gide's secretary, and translated other works by Orwell, Jean Rhys, Iris Murdoch, et al). Davet has inscribed the book to Enid Starkie on the half-title "en bien amical souvenir." Starkie is best known for her biographies of Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Gide, and Flaubert.
