About this Item

Autobiography of a career artillery observation officer in both World Wars. Self-published in a limited edition of 500 copies. Inscribed to one of his student pilot officers on the front free endpaper and whose tiny name/address label is affixed to the top of the front paste down. A tighlty bound, perhaps unread copy, without other names or markings save the gift inscription "For Jim Hill (from) Wally." Also laid-in at the front of the book is a 1985 newspaper clipping of an article featuring the author, which tells that in the early days of WWII at Fort Sill, Okla. there were no runways for the observation airplanes but used fields and roads instead. It further explains how the author was directed to institute a school for training pilots and mechanics under his command at Fort Sill. The author graduated from West Point in 1920 and spent his career as an artillery officer and pioneer in the observation techniques. Book is tightly bound, without names or markings other than those described. In a plain paper dust jacket with some edgewear, small closed tears, but now protected by a mylar cover.
