About this Item

If you are buying a first edition, first printing of the 1st US edition from Macmillan, you have some detective work ahead of you for both the book AND the DJ. Specifically, a first edition first printing requires more than just the full numberline counting from 10 down to 1. Let's start with the book. First, this book is notorious for not holding it's weight well and as a result, the pages commonly shift slightly causing the book panels and body not to match up perfectly, despite still being tight. When you come across one that has held up well, then your next question is if it is a book of the month club edition which was printed later, a little stronger and WITHOUT designation of being a club/BOMC. These copies have a faint olive green tint to the cloth binding whereas the true first is cream colored, despite both still having a full numberline. Additionally, the true 1st printing will have the number 70003 stamped on the cloth on the rear panel. If your copy does not, then likely you also have a faint olive-green tint to your cloth binding too. As for the DJ, like the book, this too fares poorly. First and most importantly, the 1st issue DJ requires a rabbit and compass on the REAR as well as the front. The price on the flap should be $6.95. In addition, all blurbs are praises from UK contributors. Later issue DJs lack the rabbit and compass on the rear and will have blurbs from US entities (NY Times, Village Voice etc). Club copy DJs are similar to 2nd printing DJs that they don't have the rabbit/compass on rear and they have US blurbs. The club DJ has no price printed however I have seen these price-clipped-? The easiest way to decipher club copies from 2nd printing DJs is to look for the 70003 number at bottom rear. This is not printed on club DJs but is printed on at least the 1st and 2nd issue DJ. Hope this helps some. Now, as for this copy.Bottom right corner is bumped. Vintage bookplate in Latin is on the inside panel. There are a few spots with a dusty top and slightly bowed backstrip. With that said, it is fairly clean and tight. Cloth backing is cream with faint olive green tint. No 70003 printed on rear cloth or DJ rear. No price printed on DJ flap. While this does not have any impression on rear panel indicating it is a bookclub/BOMC, it is despite having a full numberline from 10-1. DJ is in good only condition as it shows multiple chips. DJ backstrip is sunned. Bookseller Inventory # 000227
