Signed by Robert Wallace Smith on front flyleaf. American poet Robert Wallace Smith was born on a ranch in east-central Texas in 1908; he moved to Napa, California in 1941. Known as Napa's 'Invisible Bard,' he wrote his first collection of verse in 1943, was a co-editor of Prairie Wings (poetry magazine); his other works include The Song of Sakakawea (Bird-Woman): the Indian guide and interpretress of the Lewis and Clark Expedition ['The story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition told in verse. The author relied on the journals from the expedition to produce the poem' (published in Dallas, Texas, in 1949)]. A near fine copy, with light rubbing to extremities of binding, in very good to near fine dust jacket. The pictorial dust jacket (reproducing a drawing of a white buck on front cover and a photograph of the author on rear panel) is tanned on spine, with one short tear, light wear at extremities of spine and corners, else quite fresh and bright. .
