As with the Jonathan Hoag book, Lovecraft lays in against "the moderns" as he begins his Preface to WHITE FIRE by John Ravener Bullen - "What truly constitutes a poet it is very hard to say . . . We affect to demand that he see nothing undivested of its traditional associations, and that he present to us only the nuclear, isolated, and austerely unadorned imaginative content of his random reactions to experience and emotion. The result is a jarring jumble of academic schools, each based upon a sterile theory rather than artistic feeling . . . from the chromatic sensation-vortices of the imagists to the frozen mental detritus of Mr. T.S. Eliot and his followers" - - Whether you agree with Lovecraft or not you have to admit he certainly could turn a phrase! But unlike the Hoag book where he spends more time bashing modernity, Lovecraft found much more to praise in the work of Bullen - "[Bullen} did not neglect to treasure that rare quality of glamour which, scorned though it is by realists, yet embodies perhaps the better part of all the loveliness we know in the illusory comedy of appearences called life."And HPL continues - "{Bullen} had that rare quality of youth - a youth which with a magic . . .vivitying with grace, marvellousness and the aspect of significance a world and universe visible to the modern prose mind only as a dull, purposeless, and unsatisfying cycle of electronic, atomic, and molecular rearrangements." And finally, H.P. Lovecraft provides his own definition of what makes "Art" - "Art's secret lies not in the theme or medium, but in the artist's degree of genuinely glamorous or ecstatic vision, whatever be its mood or direction."According to S.T. Joshi, the author having a history of heart trouble, had discussed with Lovecraft the production of a posthumous volume of his verse, and after his death his mother contacted Lovecraft to edit the book. The book was privately financed not by Lovecraft, and the book was dedicated to Lovecraft. This is a presentation copy from the author's mother and is inscribed to "Mrs. & Mr., Clemens-Schenck, To keep in memory of their friend, John (Jack) Ravener Bullen. With Mrs. Bullen's good wishes." There is also included a three-page letter from his mother to Mrs. Schenck. A slight dimple flaw on the cover, else a near fine well preserved copy. Bookseller Inventory #
