Description:

Third edition. x, 347 pages. Hardcover: H 24.75cm x L 18cm. Original brown cloth; soiling and staining as well as color fading to cloth with board corners worn; frayed spine ends with head worn even with text block's top edge and some small surface cloth loss at heel, almost 18cm tear to cloth descending from head of rear joint with surface cloth somewhat peeling back from underlying backstrip, spine's gilt stamped lettering and decoration (including waterfall vignette) quite dulled but legible. Light yellow endpapers toned and soiled; faded antiquarian ink ownership inscription at top of front free endpaper which has clipped top fore-edge corner; binding splitting between frontis and title page but with text block otherwise firm; antiquarian ink signature and name stamp (same individual as aforementioned ffep inscription) at top of title page; light to occasionally moderate foxing throughout. Only a good copy but a quite uncommon book. This 1858 Leavitt and Allen edition was issued with only a single color plate - a frontispiece chromolithograph titled "Kentucky Wild Flowers" - and does not have the famous Alfred Jacob Miller chromolithographs present in the 1854 and 1855 editions published by George P. Putnam & Company. Please note that this large book has an approximate shipping weight of 3.25 pounds (1.47 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
