About this Item

8vo; 347 pages; Original publisher's presentation binding with elaborate gilt and blind stamp decoration. Gilt image of a Southern Mocking bird on both front and rear covers and has the name Tompson signed in reverse. Book has be re-backed with original spine laid down. Light rubbing and wear to covers. Illustrated with 20 chromolithograph plates drawn on stone by Max Rosenthal of 15 various plants and birds after paintings by Mrs. Webber and 5 scenes of American Indians after paintings by Alfred Jacob Miller. One of only two published works to contain chromolithographs after Alfred Jacob Miller, who is one of the three great early "Western" artists. His contribution consists of five views of American Indian life, four of which, according to the author, are of "scenes in the camp of the Delawares," although they are almost certainly based on the artist's sketches of the Snake Indians (a sub-group of the Shoshone).
