About this Item

TWO BOOK SET: A signed first edition of Ben Hogan's "Power Golf" (1948) and a signed first edition of Byron Nelson's "Winning Golf" (1946), both published by A. S. Barnes, New York. Both are missing the fragile unlaminated plain paper dust jackets. These two golfers, who grew up as lads in Fort Worth, both caddied at Glen Garden Country Club there, and even once met in the caddy championship with Byron winning by one shot. Sometime or other during the late forties or early fifties after both had achieved fame as professional golfers, they both played in a tournament in the Southeast with an amateur golfer named Warren Mitchell. It might even have been a Master's pro-am tournament. Mitchell brought along his two copies of their respective books for them to sign. Byron's book had Mitchell's address handwritten on the front free endpaper: "Warren Mitchell Jr., 7 Harcourt, Greenville, S. C." so Byron added the word "For" above the notation and below it he wrote, "From your pal, Byron." Hogan had played with Mitchell that day and had even offered him some instructional advice during the round, so he wrote inside the front cover of his book: "Remember to pro-slot, Warren. Enjoyed play with you today. Ben." Hogan was fond of the advice to "slot" the beginning of the downswing, i.e. to swing down inside or lower than the plane of the backswing. Later Warren moved to Atlanta and at sometime stuck a gold name.address sticker above Hogan's inscription on the front pastedown. It reads: Warren Mitchell, Med Insurance, 4644 Lake Forrest Drive, Atlanta, GA 30342. Zip codes came into the use in the early sixties. Years later, a bookseller from Fort Worth travels to Atlanta to participate in an Antiquarian Book & Paper Show and during the Friday morning before the weekend book show, he attends an estate sale at Warren's home, discovers the two books separated in the cluttered basement, and purchases them. The first part of this story is fiction, based on probable facts.and the last part is the truth, and this bookseller has several signed copies with their names written by both golfers and can validate their handwriting. Both books have some shelfwear, with Byron's worn the most, showing frayed corners and some fraying of the head and foot of the spine. Neither have any other names or markings except those noted above. Bookseller Inventory # 002526
