About this Item

New York: G. W. Carleton & Co, 1876. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Uncommon First Edition. Blind-stamped ribbed dark green cloth elaborately stamped in gilt at the spine. 8vo., 288pp. A near fine copy of this early detective novel. Anna Katherine Green's [1846-1935] THE LEAVENWORTH CASE, [1878]; is generally considered to be the first detective novel written by a woman & largely on the strength of that, Green is variously considered as either: Mother, Grandmother, Godmother of the Detective Story. A lesser known novel, THE DEAD LETTER by Seeley Regester [pseud. of Metta Victoria Victor] was actually published earlier, in 1867 - perhaps Seeley might be viewed as Great Grandmother - which brings us back to Bessie Turner. Published 8-years before the Green book, A WOMAN IN THE CASE, is not only the second earliest known detective novel written by a woman but also the first novel to contain the word Woman in the title. Quite historical. Turner [& Seeley] deserve more credit. Bookseller Inventory # 28565
