Book Description Forgotten Books, United States, 2016. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from Woman s Handiwork in Modern Homes It is, in like manner, to the in uence of an accomplished and benevolent woman that the Society of Decorative Art in New York owes its origin. The success of Mrs. Vvheeler s project to establish here a nursery for developing and train ing a taste for artistic handiwork among self-supporting wo men has long been assured, and has been the occasion for like enterprises in various places in other parts of the coun try. Under the wise and vigorous rule characterizing this society from the outset, work has been done which rivals that of the parent school at Kensington. Too much cannot be said for the high standard the society has maintained, or for the unwearying effort to so direct native talent among contributors as to place them in relations at once dignified and remunerative with the buying public. With a strong hold on the interest of controlling spirits in a liberal com munity, with aid freely given by artists and by the members of many active committees, with thorough training in the various departments by the best available experts - notably the classes in needlework under charge of Mrs. Pode - the Society of Decorative Art well deserves the honorable emi nence it has attained. Book Description [New York]: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1881. 8vo., xii, 242 pp., five chromolithographic plates and numerous uncolored engravings in the text. Original green cloth, stamped in burgundy ink, gilt title to upper board, some fraying to the edges of the boards; very good. Contemporary bookseller's label and later ownership signature on front pastedown. First edition. Detailed instructions and ideas for decorative projects in the home, ranging from embroidery and vase painting, to treatments of walls, windows and furniture. Two of the plates depict room designs by Louis Comfort Tiffany, and the leaf following the title-page reprints part of an address by William Morris. The chromolithographs are interesting from a technical perspective, appearing to take advantage of the color subtleties made possible by stippling, and by the crosshatching technique more commonly found in chromoxylography. OCLC 264931260. Bookseller Inventory # 108248
