About this title

From Publishers Weekly:

In this desultory second novel, awarded the Virginia Prize for Fiction, Denning (Adventures with Julia) sends Sarah Broderhouse, an identical twin, on a search for her own identity. When Sarah, who works as a photographer for the local newspaper, takes snapshots of Laura, her pretty sister, she could well be gazing at her own mirror image. But, whereas Laura seems happily married, Sarah drifts numbly and without pleasure from bed to bed. Sarah wants something, even something bad, to happen that will make her a whole person, and she thinks she's found the answer in black-clad, gun-toting Jack, a movie-tough caricature who whisks her away on his motorcycle. With Jack, who already has a wife, life becomes unpredictable, each succeeding day "like an empty space to fall into." Sarah responds to Jack's rough treatment with the same passivity she showed earlier lovers, so it's never made clear how their odd sadomasochistic affair can help her find herself. Denning's characters are too wispy to care about, and her habit of dotting the pages with inconsequential extras only aggravates the story's improvisational and disjointed quality.
