Description:

Original boards. 8vo, English Book Book [18], 376, [12], 3 leaves of plates (1 folded) : ports. Written pseudonymously by a writer who become associated with the original Josephus Flavius and Josippon. The author claims to have been born during the time of Julius Ceaser and his histories extend far beyond a normal human lifespan. Indeed, Joseph ben Gorion is also credited with authoring the Josippon. This history, however, has a distinctly fatalistic tone to it. Ben Gorion writes of the Jews that "their untractable and stubborn rebellious hearts, the defiling of the Temple, the violation of the Tombs of the dead, with other acts of profaneness and sacrilege, did them more mischief than the Roman Rams, or any other destructive engines of war especially, the rejecting and crucifying of the Lord of life, for nothing ever throve with them more. Soon after this, their land became a stage of blood and all kinds of barbarisms. Their so renowned city, their Temple and Sanctum Sanctorum, so famed over all the earth, were made level with the ground… From that time to this day, it is well known what runagates and land-loopers they have been up and down in the world…" Fitting then that a young David Grun would decide to cast off his emasculating, diasporic last name while adopting "Ben Gorion" instead, becoming the Zionist leader, David Ben Gurion. (Wiki, Millman 1866) SUBJECTS: Jews -- History -- 586 B. C. -70 A. D. -- Early works to 1800. Jews. Early works. History. OCLC lists two copies of this edition worldwide (UManchester and Huntington Lib. ) . A beautiful copy with minor shelf wear to boards. All fold-outs and illustrations are in perfect condition. Internally clean and crisp. (HEB-48-48). Bookseller Inventory #
