About this title

Depicts the various creatures that make a cozy home in the author's old pile of wood.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 1-3-- A woodpile, Parnall muses, is more than just a pile of wood. It is home to a variety of animals moving about within the nooks and tunnels provided by stacked pieces of wood. Chipmunks and mice seek its protection just as spiders, owls, and weasels come seeking food. And readers are encouraged to appreciate the varieties of wood used as fuel, for furniture, boats, or as material for artistic woodcarvings. Ink, pencil, and watercolor drawings in pale shades of yellow, green, and brown, as quiet and gentle as the lyrical text, provide close-up views of animal life within the woodpile. The text focuses on activity in and around a woodpile, but sometimes wanders to describe a marshy area stated to be perfect for gnomes and elves, naming the porcupine as the only resident gnome. Creatures that don't reside in the woodpile are referred to as animals from "beyond." Those searching for ways to emphasize the importance of trees as a natural resource will find this of value, but young children will need some assistance in making the necessary associations to understand the relationship of a woodpile to humans and their environment. --Diane Nunn, Richard E.
