Book Description Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1899. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Leigh, W.R. (illustrator). 2 volumes: ix, [5], 270, [2] p., tissue-guarded frontispiece and 4 leaves of illustrations; ix, [1], 378, [2] p., tissue-guarded frontispiece and 31 leaves of illustrations; 19 cm. Publisher's grey cloth with gilt-stamped spine title and cover title. No dust jacket. The front fixed endpapers of both volumes bear bookplates indicating that these were purchased for the Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College in 1900; each volume also bears a call number written in black on its spine. In 1891, Walter Augustus Wyckoff (1865-1908) determined to experience firsthand the life of the unskilled worker. For the next year and a half, he worked as a day laborer, travelling across the United States from Connecticut to California. Later, he became a lecturer in sociology and then an assistant professor of political economy and published this two-volume account of his experiences. The many striking and evocative illustrations in the volume The West are by noted Western artist W.R. Leigh. In Very Good Condition: extremities very slightly rubbed; ex-library, as noted above. Pages are clean and tight. An early, but still classic, work in sociology and the study of the working class. The two volumes rarely found together. Bookseller Inventory # 000034
