39 volumes, octavos, uniformly bound in original tan calf with black morocco lettering pieces, all edges marbled, various paginations, some volumes with maps, text illustrations, last volume with engraved frontispiece portrait of H. H. Bancroft. A very nice set of this iconic history of western North America, of which Robert Cowan in his "Bibliography of the History of California" says: "As time passes and prejudice drifts into obscurity, these works become more strongly intrenched each year. For scholars and investigators they will always remain the greatest source of authority." The source material used in the compilation of this vast work was primarily Bancroft's own library of some 60,000 books, maps, and manuscripts, including many pioneer narratives collected by Bancroft and his agents. Of course, H. H. Bancroft himself did not write the entire 39 volumes. The team of uncredited writers at The History Company included Bancroft's librarian Henry L. Oaks, writer of the first 5 volumes of "California" and Frances Fuller VIctor, author of the volumes "The History of Oregon;" "The History of Nevada, Colorado, and Wyoming;" "The History of Washington, Idaho, and Montana;" and, with William Nemos, volumes 6 & 7 of "California." In 1905 the University of California at Berkeley bought Bancroft's collection, establishing the Bancroft Library in his honor. Cowan II, p. 33; Graff 155; Howes B91; Zamorano 80 #3. 10 volumes show neat repairs to short splits at joint ends, some volumes with scuffing to spines and spine ends, some volumes with moderate wear to corners, usual darkening to edges of endpapers from reactive binding materials, but overall a very good set in stable and attractive condition.
