Typeface is clear and readable. Paper is free of any age-spotting or other defects. Reprints, save for a few new introductions and stories. BAL 7384. Francis Bret Harte (1836-1902) was an American author and poet, best remembered for his accounts of pioneering and mining in California. This edition, prepared with Harte's collaboration, is furnished with new introductions, a glossary of far-western terms, and a map, all composed by Harte. Illustrations by James Montgomery Flagg, Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, Charles H. Woodbury, and others. Provenance: Volume I fittingly bears the owner signature of Thomas F. Walsh. Thomas Francis Walsh (1850-1910) was an Irish-American miner who discovered one of the largest gold mines in America. Around 1871, he heeded the call to 'go west young man' and found himself in Colorado getting paid top dollar for his scarce carpentry skills. He also studied mining technology at night. After becoming an expert in the subject, Thomas Walsh finally was overcome by gold fever and took to the hills. Unlike other prospectors he took a far more methodical and careful approach to prospecting which soon paid off. In 1896 Walsh discovered The Camp Bird Gold Mine near Ouray, Colorado. This mine soon turned out $5000/day in ore and produced riches for the Walsh family. Walsh sold the property for $5.2 million in 1902. The mine produced about 1.5 million troy ounces of gold, and 4 million troy ounces of silver, from 1896 to 1990. At 2009 prices, Camp Bird's production would be worth over $1.5 billion. Walsh's daughter, Evalyn Walsh McLean, later purchased the Hope Diamond. Evalyn was also best friend and confidante to Alice Roosevelt Longworth (Teddy's controversial daughter) and Florence Harding (wife of Warren G. Harding). Bookseller Inventory # 86382
