8 volumes; original pale green buckram cloth with gilt-stamped brown leather spine labels; each volume illustrated with photogravure and halftone plates. Maps, including large folding map in vol. 5. Portion of a leaf of Muir's original manuscript mounted to blank leaf following half-title. Volumes 9 & 10 - The Life and Letters of John Muir (edited by William Frederic Bade), which were published in 1923 (vol. 9) and 1924 (vol. 10) are not present. The manuscript leaf contains 6 lines in Muir's own hand from his original manuscript of "The Mountains of California: " . . . breaking. Then comes a belt of broad leafed sedges interrupted here & there by impenetrable tangles of tall willows. Beyond this rise groves of trembling aspens. Then a dark shadowy forest [excised] belt of the Two-leafed Pine, with here & there a round carex meadow ensconced . . ." (from Chapter VI; "The Glacier Lakes, Shadow Lake, p. 127, this edition). The "Manuscript Edition" was sold by subscription; the first 6 volumes were published in 1916, volumes 7 & 8 in 1918, volumes 9 in 1923, and volume 10 in 1924. Publication of the last 2 volumes was delayed by WWI. Each volume with limitation statement and hand-numbering on copyright page. BAL 14774; Kimes 341. We had our open bookshop in the town of Sonoma for a total of 17 years, including 9 years at our East Napa St. location, however, as of April 13, 2013 we have closed our doors. Our business is now conducted online, by appointment, and at the approximately 8 antiquarian bookfairs at which we exhibit annually. INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOTE: Foreign orders are shipped at cost. International surface mail is not offered by the US Postal Service; all orders are shipped by air. We utilize the $30.00 Priority Mail International flat-rate mailer (4 lbs maximum weight) when we can adequately protect the book within. Oversize books will in most cases cost a minimum of $50.00 to ship overseas. The ABE default shipping rates are based on orders for 1 book at a maximum weight of 2.2 pounds. In many cases (large books, sets, insurance) this does not reflect the actual shipping cost. We will request additional shipping compensation through the Abebooks system when necessary.
