About this Item

A `book of nonsense` (the title literally means `The Blossoming of Culturalisation` by Mantei Ouga, illustrated by the famous artist Kawanabe Kyosai. Published in the early Meiji era, just as Japan opened its ports to foreigners, it includes many caricatures of Japanese people displaying aspects of Western culture, as well as comedic wordplay and riddles, often making fun of aspects of the culture they viewed as strange. In other places, the wordplay seems to have no relation to Western culture, and is simply for amusement purposes. Original binding, with title plate slightly damaged. Dated to Meiji 6. With delicate repair with washi paper of minor wormholing. The copy is titled Volume 1, however volume 1 was the only volume ever published. It is split into 3 parts: nature, seasons (& holidays), and people and animals. A small brown stain on the second leaf. Otherwise printing bright and clean. Extremely rare and with beautiful and amusing illustrations by one of the Japanese masters of caricature. Text in Japanese. Japanese binding. Bookseller Inventory # 214
