Book Description Westernlore Press, Los Angeles, 1954. Cloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Raymond Winters (illustrator). First Edition. PRESENTATION COPY SIGNED by the AUTHOR on the free front endpaper, 8vo, ribbed brown cloth with gold lettering on spine & blind-stamped thunderbird on front cover, Mylar-protected pictorial dust jacket (unclipped) reproducing a drawing by Raymond Winters, illustrated with 12 B&W drawings (several by Winters), xi + [12] + 13-185 pages. Walkara (Chief Walker or Colorow)--born of the Ute--was a Shoshone renegade chief--sometimes called with gradiosity: "the Napoleon of the Desert"--meaning that arid zone running from Utah Lake to the Mexican-California border. He and his mixed Timpanogo and Sanpete Band rode, robbed, and ravaged the region from around 1808 through 1855: "To California, who reckoned with his sudden and fighting incursions upon their peaceful ranchos, he is known as the greatest horse-thief in history. To Mexico, and the New Mexican colonies of his day, he was their foremost trafficker in Indian slaves, and a relentless exacter of tribute upon their trading caravans up and down the Spanish trail. To the mountain men and trappers he was one chief to count as ally rather than foe, for in his hand lay their very lives and destinies. To the Mormons, who settled in the valleys of his birthright, he was generous friend and bitter enem, killer and brother-in-the-faith; and always and eternally their enigma."-p.13 Handsome PRESENTATION COPY SIGNED by the Author on the half-title; EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION!.
