About this title

A narrative of wounded hearts and the hope for healing during the culturally tumultuous 1960's and 1970's in California. A love story featuring a recently divorced Juliana Jantzen and a trio of vastly dissimilar men who, one by one enter her life.

From Booklist:

Snow's first novel is a blast from the past. Set in the late sixties and seventies, it tells the story of Juliana Jantzen, who at 40 finally feels like a free woman five years after her divorce. Her daughters are married, she settles into her job as a reference librarian at San Jorge State College, and she gets involved with three very different men, each of whom enables her to grow. Her first love is a handsome and earnest college professor who is still obsessed with his first wife but convinces her to marry him, which she soon regrets. The second is a Vietnam War veteran and an organic farmer who typifies the Woodstock generation. The last is her house rehabber, who shares her dream to rebuild her house, which seems to be a metaphor for her life. Snow's use of the vernacular of the time gives the story authenticity, and it's great--make that groovy--to see the feminist revolution from a middle-aged perspective. Patty Engelmann
