Frontispiece drawing. The Wall tells the riveting and compelling story of forty men and women who escape the dehumanizing horror of the Warsaw ghetto. John Hersey documents the Warsaw ghetto not just as an emblem of Nazi persecution, but also in universalistic terms as man's confrontation with torture, starvation, humiliation, and cruelty. Beautifully illustrated with twelve aquatints by William Sharp; his autograph appears at the rear endpaper. Spine faded. Very minor scuffing and staining to boards. In near fine condition. John Richard Hersey was an American novelist and journalist. During World War II he covered the fighting in both Europe (Sicily) and Asia (Battle of Guadalcanal and the dropping of the atomic bomb), writing articles for Time, Life, and The New Yorker. His writings during this time In addition to The Wall, Hersey's World War II experience also led him to write A Bell for Adano about a small turn in Italy liberated by American forces.
