About this title

In her memoir, WALLED-IN: A WEST BERLIN GIRL'S JOURNEY TO FREEDOM, J. Elke Ertle draws from her childhood and teen experiences to write with a fresh voice. Having grown up in West Berlin during the Cold War at a time when the Iron Curtain took its harshest form, she juxtaposes historical events with personal narrative. She chronicles her story against the backdrop of the Cold War and draws a unique parallel between the brick-and-mortar Berlin Wall and her own, equally insurmountable, parental walls. WALLED-IN is a story of growing up, breaking free, and learning to stand alone under trying circumstances.

About the Author:

Born and raised in post-World War II West Berlin, J. Elke Ertle grew up at a time when the city symbolized the front line of the Cold War divide. While the brick-and-mortar Berlin Wall significantly restricted her physical freedom, equally rigid parental walls restricted her emotional freedom. Upon turning 21, Elke embarked on a year in the United States and never looked back.

Retired from a career in Public Administration, Elke resides in San Diego, California, and holds a masters degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from San Diego State University. On a part-time basis she teaches group excercise classes.
