About this Item

no date, presumed circa 1928 based on OCLC records, although this imprint not listed. Beige cloth. No jacket. 243 pp. With a few black and white photos throughout, as well as two maps, all present as called for. An account of the outbreak of the Chinese Civil War, including fighting in Nanking (Nanjing). The author, wife of an American businessman, who had lived in interior China for close to twenty years, recalls the lives of both the average Chinese citizen and the hardships endured, as well as the anti-foreign sentiment they faced. This includes an account of fighting between Chinese soldiers and several US and British consul officials under 'siege' in a house, saved by the bombs from warships. Alice Tisdale Hobart was an American novelist, perhaps best known for her work 'Oil Lamps for China.' GOOD+ condition. Minor soiling and uneven fading to the covers, with minor scuffing. Spine rather darkened, with a few lighter flecks. Cloth at the head and tail frayed. Interior clean and solid with very light toning. Bookseller Inventory # 006290
