About this Item

5 pp. Fo. A wonderful song with music by Stephen Glover, celebrating the conclusion of Charles Dickens's "Dombey & Son". John H. Bufford was a lithographer and publisher of prints. After 4 years in New York, he moved to Boston in 1839, later becoming associated with B. W. Thayer & Co. till 1844, when he started his own firm. He did a rare view of Princeton University and many town views as well as great whaling scenes. His work had an enormous range. Winslow Homer was his apprentice, 1855-57. Whether Homer worked on this lithograph is conjectural, but probably not as the lithograph likely dates from before Homer's apprenticeship. Although the musicwas not dated, Podeschi has an 1848 attribution It was certainly published between 1848, when Dombey was completed, and 1856, when Ditson was incorporated and moved from 115 Washington St. Hinge separated. Else, Very Good. A very clean example. Podeschi H762. Groce and Wallace; Peters, America on Stone, 118-27 (for Bufford). Fisher, 150 Years of Music Publ. in US, pp. 55-56, 85.
