Praise for Walter's Way
"Walter truly cares about the caregivers in this world. And that comes through loud and clear in this truly memorable book about a life more than well lived."
"A fascinating and inspiring account of a remarkable life."
—George J. Todd, MD, faCS
Professor and Chairman, Dept. of Surgery, Mount Sinai St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center
"Walter is more than just a benevolent soul; he's a teacher of all the good things that we should do with our gifts. We can all learn from the fascinating story he tells in these pages."
—Patrick H. Dollard
President & CEO, The Center for Discovery
From the Inside Flap:
Stroll with Walter Scherr through Ozone Park, New York. Notice the bread lines on every corner. Observe his home on 105th Street and Liberty Avenue, which his parents turned into a boarding house in order to survive the Depression. Walk past his father digging ditches for the Public Works Administration so he could earn a few cents a day. Ride the subway with Walter to Whitehall Street in downtown Manhattan to enlist in the Army six months after Pearl Harbor. Imagine his reaction when a doctor orders him to be sent to a sanitarium instead of the Army because he has active tuberculosis.
Fast forward twenty years. Fly with Walter around the world as he introduces revolutionary technologies to forty countries. Join him in India, where he meets Mother Teresa and witnesses her work with the orphaned, the impoverished, and the terminally ill. Travel with him to Normandy, where at age ninety he visits Omaha Beach to pay tribute to the thousands of soldiers who fought so that America and its allies could remain free.
Ask Walter what inspired him, and he will tell you about the thousands of people he met in his travels whose resilience spurred him to persevere when he was faced with hopeless situations. Their courage encouraged him to endure when bankruptcy seemed imminent.
Walter, his wife Vera, and their children established the Vera and Walter Scherr and Family Foundation to provide resources for people with developmental disabilities and their caretakers. In 2004, the foundation partnered with The Center for Discovery, a nationally recognized provider of health, educational, and residential services for children and adults with severe disabilities and medical frailties. The foundation underwrites the tuition for Discovery employees who want to further their knowledge of special education and clinical therapies. Discovery has awarded scholarships to ninety staff members, empowering those employees to earn bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degrees from thirty-one colleges.
