About this Item

Volume I, No. 2 of The Lakeside Library series, issued January 15, 1875, self - wraps have separated cleanly at spine, with spine edge a little rough, small tear and rub noted at top edge, one very small chip at upper right edge, else clean and bright. Publisher R. R. Donnelley, after struggling in the business for several years, and at the suggestion of his manager, Alex T. Loyd, decided to reprint hardback fiction in a very affordable paperbound format, an idea that had proven somewhat successful in the 1840's. Donnelley re-incorporated as DONNELLY & LOYD, and called his paperbound series, The Lakeside Library. Issues were large size, printed in triple columns on cheap paper, and bound in wraps. They were issued semi - monthly, on the 1st and 15th, then tri - monthly on the 1st, 10th, and 20th, beginning with No. 22, November 1, 1875. The format changed to a smaller size, and an increased number of pages with the December 1st, 1895, issue. Cost of issues were 10 cents, or $2.15 annually, and distribution was by subscription and newsstand. Donnelley also issued annual volumes, bound in hardback, at pennies of what the original books would have cost. The series was immediately successful and quickly grew to hugh popularity. Numerous publishers followed such that Donnelley is credited with having launched the "Second Paperback Revolution." By 1877, so many publishers were issuing imitations, Donnelley decided to sell to real estate developer Norman T. Gasselte, who went on to incorporate as DONNELLY, GASSELTE & LOYD. Publication continued until February, 1879. The present title was originally published by James R. Osgood, Boston, 1873, with a second 1873 edition published by Harper & Brothers. Given the cheap paper quality of the Lakeside Library series, and the oversized format, issues are exceedingly scarce, if not rare. Bookseller Inventory # 009090
