Synopsis: Interconnected stories share the angst and struggles of teenagers in the Welsh town of Cwmtaff, as they encounter sex, suicide, crime, and betrayal

From School Library Journal:

Gr 9 Up-An excess of Welsh slang and phonetic spelling makes reading these short stories an arduous task. Teens in the town of Cwmtaff struggle with sex, suicide, crime, betrayal, and other troubling issues in nine interconnected stories. Helen writes poetry after Liam's suicide. Tracey fights for a chance to play on the boys' football (soccer) team. Gary goes for a joyride in a stolen car while Matthew searches for Martians in the park. The tales are brimming with teenage angst, oppressive teachers, and parents who don't understand. The narrators are mostly tough, working class, and eager to question authority. Rough on the outside, they're sensitive and vulnerable underneath. These characters ought to appeal to American teens-especially fans of Trainspotting and British youth culture in general-but they will first have to decipher the dialect. A sample, from a scene set in a graveyard: "Maybe we'll meet Crayshaw's ghost. Ee's buried up yer...the last one oo ewsed t' live in Cwmtaff. My tadcu reckoned ee wuz a real wrong un-tha's ow ee put it. Ee done all kindsa things with is maids ee tol me." Only the most determined readers will slog through page after page of similarly impenetrable dialogue.-Miranda Doyle, Notre Dame High School, Belmont, CA
