About this Item

Roughly 20 by 29.75 inches. Stone lithograph printed in three colors printed by Heywood, Strasser & Voigt Litho Co., in New York. During and after the First World War, Hooverize became synonymous with economize, such were Herbert Hoover's exhortations as head of the United States Food Administration (USFA), charged with feeding Europe at the end of the war. Some of the USFA's posters, including this one (and others with captions like Blood or Bread and Save Food and Defeat Frightfulness), took on Hoover's hectoring tone, serving essentially as guilt trips on paper. This well-known image depicts a woman holding a crying baby and skeletal children gathered in front of a ruined cathedral. Printed in dark blue and black, with a smokey orange used for the sky, the sombre mood conveys the suffering in Europe but may not have been that effective at inspiring Americans to help. Linen-backed, with a few minor repairs at the margins. A very nice example. Bookseller Inventory # 61042
