About this Item

First generation photocopied draft script for the 1954 film, "On the Waterfront," here under the film's working title, "Waterfront" on the front wrapper. Rereleased in the late 1960s and early 1970s, we presume this copy to have been generated about that time. Not a vintage item, useful for content information only. Budd Schulberg based his 1955 novel "Waterfront" on this original screenplay. Terry Malloy (Brando) dreams about being a prize fighter, while tending his pigeons and running errands on the waterfront for Johnny (Cobb), the corrupt boss of the local union. Terry witnesses a murder at the hands of Johnny's men, and later meets the dead man's sister and feels responsible for his death. She introduces him to Father Barry (Malden), who tries to persuade him to help implicate the dock racketeers. Text of the infamous "I could have been a contender" monologue on page 97 matches that of the film, which we understand indicates that it is a Final Shooting Script. White wrappers, noted as copy No. 65, and "ON THE" written above the working title, "WATERFRONT" (all photocopied). Last leaf of text numbered 134. Pages Near Fine, prong binding.
