About this Item

This paperback book in original slipcase has brown covers with simple white print on cover and spine. It is in very good condition with wear along spine and the shadow of a ring on the back cover--slipcase is good with some wear and is covered by a photo of skipjacks along a distant watery horizon. Author and photographer, Robert de Gast, died Jan 3, 2015. This was his first published book and is one of 3000 copies. Unpaginated, the book is formatted horizontally and is made up of black and white photographs followed by four essays. Tom Horton describes the photos as "maybe the finest photographic study of watermen ever published" adding, it "captured what oystering meant culturally, economically and socially." Much has changed on the Chesapeake in the 45 years since these iconic and historic images were captured. Bookseller Inventory # 000189
