Gervase Markham s comprehensive collection of detailed works cover all aspects of keeping animals, poultry, fish and wildfowl, hunting and field sports, medicine and domestic economy including dairy work and brewing, the improvement of land, the preservation of harvested crops, fruit and vegetables, the keeping of orchards, the propagation of plants etc etc. This popular and probably indispensable book was reprinted numerous times during the 17th century. Editions as early as this one are uncommon. Various woodcut illustrations are included within the texts of the first, fifth and sixth works. Woodcut initials and decorative tail-pieces throughout. Bound in modern 17th century-style full calf with a gold-lettered label to the spine. General title page laid down onto Japanese tissue with minor loss at its foredge. Loss to the lower corner of the margin of one text page (no loss to the text). A paper flaw has caused minor loss to the lower margin of one text page (no loss to the text). A closed horizontal tear to one text page (with no loss). A neat repair to loss at the lower margin of one text page with the loss of one word on each side of the page, but no loss of sense of the text. Two occurrences of contemporary marginalia. Occasional light staining and dust-soiling throughout as is normal for what must have been a well-used book. Otherwise, a clean copy of an uncommon edition of this work, with the text block sound and the binding in very good condition.
