About this title

Synopsis:

Can reading and reciting light verse help you to lose weight?

YES!...but only if you recite this collection of 100% fat-free, humorous poems while walking on your treadmill or whisper them under your breath as you swim laps at the local pool. WEARING THIN: Rhymes from the Diet Jungle is like no other diet book. In it you'll find no recipes. Instead you'll find engaging poems about dieting that tickle the funny bone even as the stomach gurgles.

Psychologist/poet Irwin Flescher believes that playful rhymes can murmur and chuckle in the mind's ear, triggering a heightened awareness that leads to self-examination and self-control. Poems like prayers can inspire, persuade and heal in subtle ways that can stick with us for years. Keep WEARING THIN at the dinner table and savor a line or two instead of that strawberry shortcake or give it to that friend who just started the big diet and encourage this person to laugh his/her way through temptation.

About the Author:

Irwin Flescher, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist with a sustained interest in the creative process and in the application of poetry therapy to problems of everyday living. This collection of original verse, which centers on the frustrating quest for the physically redesigned self, was inspired by the author's earlier poetic contributions to overcome cigarette addiction.

Dr. Flescher earned the doctorate in psychology from Columbia University and has an established private practice on Long Island, New York. He is a former president of the Nassau County Psychological Association and the author of Children in the Learning Factory: The Search for a Humanizing Teacher (Chilton Book Co.). His verse has appeared in The Lyric, Lake Effect, Poetry Calendar, and the anthology Bittersweet.
