Alfred Knopf. New York. 1929. Fifth Printing, Jan 1929. Hardcover, 109 pages. Bound in green cloth with gold lettering on the spine (somewhat dulled) and front cover. Very good condition. Clean and tight. SIGNED BY LANGSTON HUGHES on the front endpaper, “Langston Hughes, Cleveland, February 2, 1931” Signed by the previous owner, Alan Harvey, on the inside front cover. A few poems are have checks or stars by the titles in pencil; these are poems that the previous owner marked after having heard Hughes read them aloud. This is Langston Hughes first book. The first publications of the poems which would come to stand for a generation of Americans, black and white, ushering in a new age for the country. The Harlem Renaissance, desegregation. “I am Negro: / Black as the night is black, / Black lihe the depths of my Africa. / I’ve been a slave: / Caesar told me to keep his door-steps clean. / I brushed the boots of Washington. / I’ve been a worker: / Under my hand the pyramids arose. / I made mortar for the Woolworth Building ” This is a very nice copy.
