About this Item

Illustration by Hughie Lee-Smith. 16mo. Stiff blue wrappers. 17pp. Line drawing. Near fine. Outer wrappers (only) age toned along spine. A tight and attractive first edition of this slim essay by the noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar and New York City Civil War Round Table officer (1914-93) -- at this time a 27-year-old aspiring poet and writer who went on to a career in the steel industry, though his heart always lie with Lincoln, the Civil War and American history. This essay chronicles a Latvian immigrant named Karl Stein, born 1870, who wove carpets, painted pictures and read good books. Tipped to the front flyleaf is an additional flyleaf which the author has boldly signed and inscribed to his wife: "To Georgia, / My own beloved / Insurgent. / love, / A. / Jan. 17, 1950." Likely one of the earliest commissions of African-American artist Lee-Smith (1915-99). Uncommon. Bookseller Inventory # 35263
