About this Item

FIRST ISSUE of the author's first book, and one of only two published in his lifetime, the other being Walden. One of only 550 copies. Original black cloth, rebacked preserving the original spine but for a sixth of an inch at the head and foot with loss of the publisher's imprint. Endpapers In BAL's presentation binding, with the covers blindstamped with an elaborate design of plumes and scrolls with an oval-shaped scroll design in the center, all within a five-rule border. On the trade binding the covers were stamped with only the five-rule border. 1000 copies were printed at the author's expense, and a little over half the edition was bound but the book sold poorly and Munroe returned the remainder to Thoreau, who kept the books in his attic bedroom, occasionally selling or giving away copies himself. After his death, Ticknor and Fields purchased and bound up the remaining 450 sets of sheets with a cancelled title page dated 1862, making up the second issue. Complete with the terminal ad leaf announcing the imminent publication of Walden, though it was not to appear for another five years. Pages 189 and 190 are darkened. There's a faded ink signature on the first blank, and the odd dime-sized dampstain is sporadically present in the blank upper margin, never approaching any text. A very good copy. BAL 20104.
