Quarto. Unpaginated. pp. Original illustrated paper covered boards. Front free endpaper inscribed and signed in pencil by the author: "Leopoldine Schmidt, zur Freude und Erinnerung an Bruno Taut. 3. 7. 20" Title page in red and black lettering.Bruno Taut's architectural play for symphonic music, "Der Weltbaumeister" (The World's Master Builder), is the centerpiece of his trilogy called "utopian architecture" - set between "Alpine Architecture" and "Dissolution of the Cities" ("Alpine Architektur" and "Auflösung der Städte")."In 28 reproductions of charcoal sketches the German architect illustrates and describes with added stage directions, the creation and growth of architectural forms and their disintegration and dissolution in the cosmos. He symbolizes this passing with the dissolution of a gothic cathedral, whose fragments pour out into the universe. The accompanying music would reflect shapes and colors in complex sound patterns, creating a synthetic experience." (Katrin Bettina Müller, TAZ, Berlin).Taut was heavily influenced by the German science fiction writer Paul Scheerbart's imaginations of utopian glass cathedrals and performances on a scale unimaginable in the common theatrical practice of the time, specifically by Scheerbart's essay "Glasarchitektur" which Taut realized in his trilogy. The pieces were not performed during Taut's lifetime. In 1993 a full premiere was staged at the Graz Opera with music by Jens-Peter Ostendorf.Binding partly soiled on front cover, sunned and rubbed along edges. Tail of spine chipped. Text in German.
