A double-hemisphere hand-colored world map [18 x 12 1/2"; 14 1/4 x 18 1/2" in mat]. 3 vertical fold lines (one closed tear that runs from the top to the foot has been backed with tissue). The map has been mounted to the mat with two pieces of tape to the reverse. A world map from the Dutch engraver Daniel Stoopendaal. Based on the world map by Nicholas Visscher. Four female representations of the continents are shown in each corner. Also in the decorative borders are a number of animals. Illustrates 2 views of the solar system, the Copernican heliocentric model and the Ptolemaic system, with the earth at the center. California is an island.
