About this Item

MacKAY, Alex[ander]. Western World; or, Travels in the United States in 1846-47: Exhibiting Them in Their Latest Development, Social, Political, and Industrial; Including a Chapter on California. Phila.: Lea & Blanchard, 1849. 2 Vols. 1st American ed. 312;316 pp. Orig. cloth. Spine ends worn, light foxing, else very good to near fine. HOWES M-117, "Judicious commentary based on extensive travels." Mackay arrived at Halifax in January 1846 and proceeded through North and South Carolina, by water to Mobile, through the lower South and up the Mississippi to Louisville. He left the continent in early 1847, after having travelled north through Pittsburgh, Niagara Falls, Montreal and New York. "Mackay was objective and unbiased in his data regarding the South. His analysis of the region takes up about one-third of the two volumes. He warned of the dangers of forming impressions from a few days' observation of its `floating population' encountered on steamboats, in railway carriages, and in barrooms. `In the South particularly,' he continued, `one must get out of the current if he would appreciate society aright.' As an evaluation of the overall picture of the South this scholarly work ranks as one of the foremost accounts of the period." --Clark III, 353. Bookseller Inventory # 54114
