Synopsis: Counting as they sing, whales use their mighty voices to pass on to one another the numbers from one to ten.

From School Library Journal: Kindergarten-Grade 1 Challenges to the conventions of a particular genre or format can be revealing, but sometimes the result is confirmation of how essential those conventions are. Whale Song offers moving and tender portrayals of the massive mammals in their undersea element (stunningly rendered in vibrant blues and greens). The text is a poetic paeon to their playfulness and power. However, a nod in the direction of the counting book has been made by reducing the mysterious beauty of whale song to the calling out of the numbers one to ten. Inexplicably, there is no correspondence between any given number and the image on the page: the page for one shows two whales; the page for three displays a tail only; seven shows a mother-and-baby pair; the page for eight, five whales. All the numbers are written out in italic caps: there are no numerals. The result is considerably less than a counting book: a disservice to the concept, to the artist, and to his magnificent subjects. Patricia Dooley, formerly at Drexel University, Philadelphia
