About this title

Synopsis:

James Henderson Finlayson, born in Larbert, Scotland, began his career on the stage in Edinburgh, Scotland. He immigrated to the U.S. and starred in the New York Theatre where he was an immediate success. He ultimately came to Hollywood and, like Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin, began performing in silent films. Most remembered as the ultimate foil in 33 Laurel and Hardy films, as Stan Laurel once fondly said about him, "he made our comedy work."

Many overlook his tremendous contribution to the development of silent and sound comedy films; he appeared in more than 236 films produced in the U.S. and the U.K. during a 40 year period. He died in 1953, when comedy film was just beginning to develop in television.

The author traces Fin’s life from Larbert, Scotland, and his many brief appearances in Mack Sennett and Hal Roach films in the 1920s and 1930s, to his return to do films in the U.K. during 1933 to 1935.
