About this title

As February 2 approaches, Freddy Groundhog gets ready for the big event on Groundhog Day.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1-- Freddy the groundhog hears about the tradition of February 2 from his father, and learns that it will be his turn this year to make the official early check on the approaching spring season. The illustrations, which focus on the groundhogs and their underground habitat, will pull readers' eyes into the book for close and narrow views of life in the long tunnels that wind beneath the property of Farmer Green, where Freddy and his large family live in hibernation during the winter months. The simple pictures are strong in color and bold in design. The large drawings fill the pages with color and spill over the edges. Wendy Kesselman's Time for Jody (Harper, 1975; o.p.) contains fine black line drawings in a somewhat English tradition and depicts the actions of the official groundhog, which is, specifically, female. Kroll's It's Groundhog Day! (Holiday, 1987) is gentler and more refined in the finished art work. Sadly, Glass' story is slight and the writing is filled with cliches, cutesy names, and hackneyed expressions. It is too bad the child-oriented pictures are not better supported by a text that is fresher and more original.
