About this title

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.:

You Can Recycle Necessities For Resettled Households....Annette Allyn Day, a typesetter in Atlanta, Georgia, collects donations of household goods and, operating out of her home, distributes them to formerly homeless people who are just getting resettled into housing....

"People are referred from all over Atlanta and different agencies to get this home kit," says Day. "It's a box of raw bones basics that people can carry away in their arms. It's very immediate. They can call and make an appointment to pick up a home kit on Saturday. The basic home kit is worth about $100."

....Day gives out about seven home kits a week. "We get our donations from private individuals (although it would be wonderful if we had hundreds of pots and pans that a big cookware company might donate). But we're not so much interested in great quantities as we are in really talking with someone and pulling together things they really need."
