This entry in Wright's What They Didn't Teach You series may take more courage than volumes on the American Revolution, Civil War, Wild West, and World War II: more readers remember the '60s. Wright opens with the '50s, establishing context. After discussing TV, culture shock, and summer riots, he considers "Battles Won: Civil Rights," "Battles Tied: The Cold War," and "Battles Lost: Vietnam." (The last is, inevitably, one of the longest chapters, perhaps matched by the assassinations chapter that follows.) Wright examines the generation gap, Richard Nixon, Cuba, music, and drugs. "This Old House: Childhood's End" catalogs '60s losses and disillusionments, including the first evidence of cigarettes' dangers; the deaths of Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Jack Kerouac, Nat King Cole, and Judy Garland; the payola scandal; and the murder of Viola Liuzzo during the march on Selma. A final chapter views the '70s as "a sixties hangover." Although this volume won't replace more thorough studies, it will appeal to those who enjoyed other titles in the series. Mary Carroll
