Synopsis: A story based on the premise that Bobby Kennedy is sent to Seattle, Washington, to be a moving man when the gods are unable to decide where to send him for eternity
From the Author: I am a fiction writer. My award-winning novel, 'When Bobby Kennedy Was a Moving Man' was published in 1993. I am currently at work on a new novel, but I am as superstitious as a ballplayer, and I never discuss the nature of work-in-progress.
I have also published one non-fiction book, a memoir about the eight years I spent teaching writing in medium and maximum security prisons throughout Washington State. That book, 'The Funhouse Mirror: Reflections on Prison' was published by the Washington State University Press in August of 2000.
I am very committed to re-introducing education into the prisons. (The Omnibus Crime Bill of 1994 eliminated Pell Grants for state and federal prisoners. This loss of funding-- in combination with a new 'get tough' policy on prisoners-- resulted in the decimation of prison education programs here in Washington and throughout most of the country.) We release half a million prisoners a year in this country, and those who chose to acquire educations while incarcerated re-offended at half the rate of those who didn't. It is tragic that this humane option has been denied to those felons who wish to improve themselves.
