About this title

A child extolls the virtues of the family pond, without which life would not be nearly so much fun.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1 Identical in style and plot, these are two versions of basically the same story. In When Dad Cuts Down the Chestnut Tree, a young boy imagines all the benefits of having a tree removedno leaves to rake, no branches to scratch him, and Dad will make wooden toys for him. When he thinks a bit deeper, he realizes that he will miss the treehis swing, his treehouse, a cool spot in the summer heat. The book ends with the sing-song rhyme, ``Trees are special, large or small,/ So Daddon't cut it down at all! '' In When Dad Fills in the Garden Pond, the same child protests when his mother wants to make the pond into a flower bed. He recalls pleasant times and activities at the pond including swims, the wild-life that inhabits the pond, etc. Mom relents, ``Now that Mom has heard our case, /She sees the pond's a special place.'' Both titles espouse an appreciation for nature, as it is, but the message is strained by the uninspired verse. Pleasant watercolor and colored pencil sketches are matched in framed boxes above the verse. Overall, these books are not distinguished. Susan Nemeth McCarthy, Arlington County Public Library, Va.
