About this title

Jenny imagines herself in various occupations

From School Library Journal:

These hand-sized books use simple pop-ups to support their pro-imagination messages. Each book features a child who plays make-believe with toys, contemplates a future career, or pretends to be a fairy-tale character. Cut-out forms of the children stand in the gutter of each spread, with a new setting popping up around them as each page is turned. This gimmick is different but, as the only thing going for the series, it just isn't enough. Detracting greatly are the rhyming texts, which are forced and cloying ("As Cinderella/Sue goes to the ball/ Where she meets the prince,/ Who's handsome and tall"). A degree worse than boring, this writing actually stifles readers' imagination even as it chirps that "pretending is fun to do." Colored-pencil illustrations are all cut from the same mediocre molds. Perfect young white children with pointlessly pleasant looks on their faces appear detached from everything happening around them. When Ricky Reads is the most cleverly executed: Pinocchio's whale opens wide with a turn of the page; Hansel's gingerbread house has a roof with pop-out peppermint leaves. Even in that book, however, the insulting formulaic poetry prevents any magic from developing. --Liza Bliss, Worcester Pub . Lib . , MA
