About this title

Synopsis:

In, WHERE BUGLES CALLED AND RIFLES GLEAMED, William A. Spedale presents an extraordinary view of a Civil War engagement. Having repeatedly canvassed the battlefield for years, the author enlightens us as to heretofore unknown aspects of the history of Port Hudson. The book includes photographs of the Port Hudson battlefield taken during the war, contemporary views and a few views taken during the intervening years. The chief purpose of this work is to provide the reader with a portfolio of the breastworks and rifle pits that still surround Port Hudson. The author provides considerable insight into the contemporary photographs. He places the sites in historical perspective by identifying the troops that occupied the position and those who attacked it. The book contains a few photographs of the persons who participated in the conflict, and photographs of some of the more spectacular and fascinating caches of arms and artifacts recovered from the battlefield as well. Arrowheads inform the reader of man's visit long before 1863, and the Civil War relics pictured tell a variety of intriguing stories. "WHERE BUGLES CALLED AND RIFLES GLEAMED presents heretofore unpublished information about a battle that has received little acknowledgement during the intervening 145 years. The author has done an excellent job in handling a complex topic in an original manner", Lawrence L. Hewitt, Phd.D., American History.
